5 Things I'm Loving

Day 12 of the 31 Day Challenge......this is getting hard!

Day 12 of the 31 Day Challenge......this is getting hard!

Despite the time I've spent in the kitchen, I am trying to keep some balance and have a life! So here are a few things I'm loving outside of school.

#1: Music has always been a big part of my life.  I used to spend most of my allowance as a little girl buying 45s, sometimes that even came sealed in a  big stack so you didn't even know what you were getting!   I still love music and am hooked on Pandora. I love that you can create a shuffle so you get a combination of all your favorites.  I also bought this album (Paradise Valley) a few months ago.  John Mayer is great - voice, guitar, lyrics, all spot on.  These are two of my  favorite songs these days.

Love this duet, even if People magazine tells me John Mayer and Katy Perry broke up ....

#2: I have a terrible sweet tooth and if I could, I would eat dessert after every meal.  Since I try to be healthy (and I want to fit into my jeans at the end of culinary school!), I drink hot tea after dinner.  I love this one.  It is sweet and spicy.  I like it with a splash of milk.  I don't think it needs any kind of added sweetener!

#3: I saw the movie The Giver  twice!  I went once by myself and loved it.  Tom was here for the weekend a few weeks ago and we wanted to go to the movie.  This was the only good thing playing so I saw it again.  Tom didn't really like it.  No car chases and nothing explodes, so it was too tame for him. It is based on the book of the same name that I had never heard of.  A girl in my class told me she had to read it in middle school.  Hmm.... Anyway, it is really interesting - you can read a synopsis here.  I really liked how through the teachings you are reminded of the small beauties of life that we all take for granted.  I think it is definitely worth seeing!

#4:  Right up there with #2 on the list, this treat from Trader Joe's is sweet and screams holidays.  There are a nice small dessert, two soft ginger cookies filled with pumpkin ice cream.  They are really vibrant with spice, but creamy from the ice cream.  Truly delicious.  My only complaint is they melt pretty quickly so mine were a little misshapen when I got them home from the store.

  • #5:  I love the show On Being with Krista Tippett that comes on NPR.   Her guests are quite wide-ranging and the discussions are so interesting. Their website describes the show as discussing " the animating questions at the center of life: What does it mean to be human, and how do we want to live?  We explore these questions in their richness and complexity in the 21st-century lives and endeavors.  We pursue wisdom and moral imagination as much as knowledge; we esteem nuance and poetry as much as fact."   I learn something and am inspired every time I listen.  In Houston (and Austin) it comes on at 6 am on Sunday morning (bummer) but I often wake up early, so I turn it on and lay in bed and listen.  I miss it a lot but no worries, it is easy to listen online, and you can get it as a podcast.  I will often listen during a long walk.  Look at the website, I'm sure you'll find something interesting to listen to!  And the photography on the website is pretty great too....

So these are kind of random things that make me happy these days.  I would love to know yours....leave me comments on Facebook here, as my comments are STILL broken.  That is not making me happy but there's not much I can do about it but grit my teeth and wait....
