I am fortunate that I rarely get sick.  (Knock on wood.)  I have always gotten my flu shot (since 1984!) and have never gotten the flu, even a mild case.  I sometimes have a little sinus congestion with allergies in the spring and fall but it is mild.  If I am sick it is usually very short-lived.  I think it is because I prioritize sleep, especially if I start to feel a little unwell. I also eat lots of fruits and veggies and try to stay active.  "They" say that is the key and I think it works!  

 

That said, sick or not sick, it is nice to have a little something warm to drink.  I made this tea based on a recipe for a tonic out of The Longevity Kitchen by Rebecca Katz.   You basically cook some lemon and orange rind with spices in water for 45 minutes.  You strain it, then add some orange and lemon juice.  This is the drink as she makes it.  I thought it would be good to add some tea bags to steep after cooking and before you add the juice. I was right, it hits the spot.  I think either way would be really good if you are congested, have the flu or a cold, or just need some comfort on a cold morning.  I also put the leftovers in the fridge and drank it as iced tea.  It is not the sweet tea of the South but was unusual and a nice change.  It does get stronger as it sits, so drink in a day or too, or dilute with a little more water or juice.   I hope you don't get sick, but if you do, this is your drink!

Spiced Tea

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients (8 cups)

  • 8 cups of water
  • A one inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 Tbsp grated Meyer lemon zest
  • 2 tsp grated orange zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 green cardamom pods
  • 4 whole allspice berries
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 teabags of black or orange pekoe tea (decaffeinated is great)
  • 1/4 cup Meyer lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp honey

Instructions

Put the water and all the spices and zest into a large saucepan. (Not the juices or the honey). Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cover. Simmer for 45 minutes. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve into a clean saucepan. Return heat to low and add the teabags if using. Let steep for 5 minutes. Remove the teabags and add the lemon juice, orange juice, and honey. Serve warm. Put any leftovers in the fridge and serve over ice or reheat gently.

This can be made without the tea and used as a soothing tonic when you are not feeling well.
